Wisdom teeth can sometimes develop problems, especially if they do not have enough space to emerge at the back of the patients’ mouth. As a result, the wisdom tooth doesn’t come out properly (i.e. they are impacted). This can often lead to pain, swelling or sometimes even an infection. Badly positioned wisdom teeth can also contribute to tooth decay, mouth infections and gum disease.

When problems do develop with your wisdom teeth, an extraction or tooth removal may be required. Extracting the tooth can help reduce symptoms like swelling and pain.  The extraction procedure is performed by a dentist or an experienced oral surgeon if the extraction is complicated.

Extracting a wisdom tooth is one of the most common procedures performed in the country. It’s usually performed when the patient is in his/her late teens or twenties, when the patient’s wisdom teeth begin to emerge. Our dentists will assess the wisdom teeth with x-rays (if needed) to determine the best course of treatment. If an extraction is then advised, our dentists will discuss with you what happens before, during and after the procedure; our dentists will also be able to address any concerns or questions you may have. They will explain the entire procedure, including whether a local or general anaesthetic is required.

If you are experiencing problems with your wisdom teeth, please give us a call to discuss what might be the best course of treatment for you.
