Dental Veneers
Porcelain Dental Veneers
A Porcelain Dental Veneer (also sometimes referred to as dental porcelain laminate) is a custom made shell of wafer-thin tooth coloured porcelain material that’s created to cover the front surface of a tooth in order to improve the tooth’s appearance and give the patient an aesthetically pleasing smile. The porcelain shell or porcelain veneer is bonded to the front tooth surface, changing the size, shape, colour or length of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are very versatile and cab be used to address a vast variety of cosmetic dental issues – for example, they can be used to close gaps between your teeth, align crowding or protruding teeth or even whiten a discoloured tooth.
Porcelain Dental Veneers are a very popular option for both dentists and patients and have been used to improve the appearance of millions of teeth around the world. They can be matched exactly to the shade of the surrounding teeth and provide very natural looking results. They also show good resistance to staining.
Composite Dental Veneers
A Composite Dental Veneer is similar to a porcelain veneer, however, the key difference is that a composite veneer is made from a composite resin material instead of a thin shell of porcelain. The composite resin is carefully sculpted by the dentist onto the tooth surface and hardened to achieve the desired size and shape for the tooth. The composite material is a like a paste that’s applied to the front surface of the tooth and then sculpted like putty. Once the desired shape is achieved, the composite resin is hardened using a special light and then polished. Composite resins can be exactly matched to the shade of the surrounding teeth, providing beautiful natural results.
Not to be confused with composite bonding, composite dental veneers can be used to fix a number of cosmetic dental issues – for example, they can be used to fix discoloured teeth, straighten minor teeth misalignments or fix worn out teeth. Also, they can be used to make significant changes to the size and shape of a tooth. Composite dental veneers are often a good alternative to porcelain veneers. They can be applied to as many teeth as is required. Composite veneers can provide a full smile makeover at a much lower cost as compared to regular porcelain veneers usually. Also composite veneers are less invasive in comparison to porcelain veneers; less damage is done to the underlying tooth during their preparation as compared to porcelain dental veneers.

What are the advantages of Porcelain Dental Veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure used to improve the appearance and look of a patient’s teeth and smile. Porcelain veneers have the following advantages –
- Porcelain dental veneers provide very good natural looking results.
- Gum tissue is known to tolerate porcelain veneers rather well.
- Porcelain dental veneers are good at resisting stains.
- Porcelain veneers can make discoloured or darkened teeth appear lighter / whiter.
- As compared to dental crowns, porcelain dental veneers use a more conservative approach to changing the shape, size and colour of the tooth. Porcelain veneers do not require as extensive grinding of the underlying tooth as dental crowns do. However, they still offer a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to dental crowns.
What are the disadvantages of Porcelain dental Veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers have the following inherent disadvantages –
- The procedure undertaken to attach a porcelain dental veneer to the tooth is not reversible.
- Porcelain veneers are usually more expensive as compared to composite dental bonding or composite veneers.
- When porcelain dental veneers crack or chip, they cannot be usually repaired.
- Teeth can become more sensitive to hot and cold with porcelain veneers as tooth enamel has to be removed in order to to fix the porcelain veneer.
- The colour of a porcelain dental veneer cannot be changed once it’s been put in place. Teeth whitening will not change the colour of the porcelain veneer as a result.
- Patients with a history of clenching or grinding their teeth are not usually good candidates for porcelain veneers. This is because grinding and clenching can cause the veneers to crack or chip.
Can I have Composite Dental Veneers?
Any person with healthy teeth can have composite dental veneers. They can be used to achieve the following results–
- Increase the size or change the shape of a tooth to improve the patient’s smile.
- Change or whiten the shade of a discoloured tooth.
- Straighten minor teeth mis-alignments.
- Repair chips or broken parts of a tooth.
- Close gaps between the teeth.
- Protect the surface of the teeth.
What are the advantages of Composite Dental Veneers?
Composite dental veneers are one of the least invasive cosmetic dentistry treatments available to patients to improve their smile. In comparison to porcelain dental veneers, composite veneers offer the following advantages –
- In a vast majority of situations, the teeth do not need to be drilled, making composite dental veneers a highly desirable form of cosmetic dental treatment. Composite veneers are therefore considered to be a reversible form of cosmetic dental treatment.
- Composite veneer does not have to cover the entire surface of the tooth necessarily. This allows a composite veneer to be a good choice for closing gaps between two teeth.
- A composite veneer is easier to repair in comparison to a porcelain veneer. A porcelain veneer can chip or break – a new veneer then has to be made to replace the broken one. Composite veneers in comparison can be repaired easily.
- A composite veneer can often be completed in one visit to the dental surgery. A porcelain veneer on the other hand requires multiple appointments with the dentist.
- Composite dental veneers are typically less expensive as compared to porcelain dental veneers.
What are the disadvantages of Composite Dental Veneers?
Composite dental veneers have the following disadvantages as compared to porcelain dental veneers –
- A composite veneer stains more easily in comparison to a porcelain veneers. A patient’s dietary habits can play a factor in the level of staining of the composite veneer as a result. Porcelain veneers on the other hand have good resistance to staining.
- The look and quality of a composite veneer is dependent on the experience and skill levels of the dentist. Natural looking composite veneers require an experienced dentist with years of experience in making composite veneers. A porcelain veneer is typically made in a laboratory on the other hand, with the dentist attaching it to the front surface of the tooth once it’s manufactured.
- A composite veneer cannot be whitened with teeth whitening systems. This is the case with porcelain veneers as well. Patients need to whiten their teeth prior to making any composite veneers.
