BRACES

Braces in London Waterloo

A number of our orthodontic braces patients in London Waterloo are adult patients above the age of 40. If you are over 40 and want to create beautiful straight teeth, our orthodontic dentists at Whites Dental can help. We are based in London Waterloo, adjacent to Southwark Station.

Does a Patient’s Age Matter?

As you may perhaps suspect, orthodontic braces can take a little longer for adults than teenagers. Faster results are achievable when we treat children because their jaws are still growing and teeth are still moving so they are easier to shift into the desired place. Adult teeth have been in position longer and take more work to move into place. When it comes to your oral health as long as you have healthy teeth, you will never be too old to be considered for orthodontic treatment. Overlapping or crowded teeth can be difficult to clean, making it easier to get tooth decay and gum disease. Malocclusion– which is a term used when your teeth don’t come together properly when you close your jaws, can cause chewing and swallowing problems. Poor tooth alignment can put excessive stress on the chewing muscles, causing facial pain and also make it difficult to pronounce certain sounds. Usually, dental braces are not appropriate for patients with weakened gums or poor dental health as they place a lot of extra pressure on the gums. It goes without saying that you need healthy gums that are able to bounce back if you want to undertake braces treatment. You can get braces at any age and it’s more common now to see adults with braces than it was a few decades ago!

If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth, do NOT let your age stop you. In most instances, even older teeth are strong enough to undergo orthodontic care. There are abundant of compelling reasons to seek orthodontic treatment and consider braces, whether you’re 40 years old or over.

Although childhood is the “ideal” time to make changes in the positioning of the teeth as the bones are still in a malleable stage, more adults are opting for orthodontic treatment and coming away with excellent results. If you’re thinking of going for orthodontic treatment to correct longstanding cosmetic or bite problems or to remedy the effects of tooth loss, you need to keep a few things in mind:

  • The bones of adults have stopped growing, so not all structural changes can be accomplished without surgery.
  • The entire process might take longer for you than for a child or adolescent. Treatment time on average last about 2 years, however it fluctuates from patient to patient.
  • Before starting your treatment, you may also need to see a periodontist as well as your general dentist and orthodontist to ensure that the treatment is not complicated by bone loss resulting from gum disease.

How braces work

The science of orthodontics relies on putting pressure on the teeth to enable them to shift and change their position. The orthodontist achieves this by attaching mechanical devices, or appliances such as brackets in terms of braces, to the teeth to gently push them in the desired direction. When a tooth is exposed to pressure from one side, its root presses against the underlying bone. Eventually, this force leads to a portion of the bone next to the root to disappear, permitting the tooth to move in the direction it is being pushed. As the tooth migrates, new bone builds up in the space freed on the other side of the root. This prevents the tooth from moving back to its original position. You may need to have one or more teeth removed before you can start orthodontic treatment especially if you are lacking space.

Braces are the most commonly used orthodontic appliance. They are very versatile, they are able to move the teeth in a variety of directions at once and treat many teeth at the same time. These devices rely on the use of brackets attached or bonded to the tooth surfaces. The arrangement of the wires can be customised to apply different pressures to individual teeth. Sometimes elastic bands or springs are attached to the arch wire to guide the teeth in the right direction. Usually, it takes one to two hours to place braces on the teeth. You’ll probably observe discomfort and soreness at the beginning especially during the first few days after getting braces and having adjustments made, but an over-the-counter painkiller, like ibuprofen, can help.

You can have braces at any age

It’s important to note that brace’s treatment is not limited by a patients age; therefore please don’t be put off by certain stereotypes. You can use braces to correct crooked teeth at any age, just so long as your teeth and gums are reasonably strong and healthy. At Whites Dental, our dentists believe that no patient is ever too old to undertake dental care of any kind. In fact, dental care becomes even more fundamental as you age. Teeth naturally shift over time as you lose teeth or enamel starts to wear away, and the arch that is naturally formed by your teeth starts to tilt. This tilting often produces food traps and crowding, and at the same time, the natural cleaning process of your teeth is hindered.

In our opinion, it’s never too late to get brace’s, However, the particular considerations of your case are unique to you, and we encourage you to see both a general dentist and an orthodontist to guide you into making the right decision for you. You’ll need a full set of X-rays, and your orthodontist may need to take some special X-rays to decide whether orthodontics will work and how long the process should take. There are many new appliances in orthodontics, including Invisalign, which may be able to help you without requiring you to wear fixed braces on your teeth.

You have to remember that the end goal is a healthier mouth and a much more beautiful smile. After a few months, you will barely even notice your braces at all that you will be wondering what all the fuss was about.
