Deciding On A Denture Treatment

Getting dentures for the first time is a big decision, typically they are a suitable solution for older patients, those who are less active and also perhaps have a weakness in the bone density, gum or teeth strength, thus making a permanent or implant treatment not advisable, due to the the operation process.

Denture Bridge and Dental Bridge – are they the same thing?

A denture bridge and a dental bridge are essentially the same thing. They both refer to a fixed dental appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent natural teeth or implants. These “bridges” close the gap created by missing teeth, restoring both functionality and appearance.

However, some people might use the term denture bridge informally to distinguish it from removable dentures, but technically, it refers to a dental bridge, which is a permanent solution as opposed to removable dentures. The bridge is typically made of porcelain or metal, and unlike dentures, it cannot be removed by the patient.

How much is a denture bridge? A denture bridge, which is used to replace missing teeth by anchoring to existing teeth or implants, can vary in cost. In the UK, prices typically range from £450 to £1,000 per bridge unit, depending on the materials used and whether you’re opting for a metal or porcelain bridge. Whites Dental offers these treatments at prices from £525 we also offer 0% finance plans and accept many insurance plans – to make treatments more affordable.

A denture bridge and chrome dentures are different.

  • A denture bridge (or fixed dental bridge) is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent natural teeth or implants. It is a permanent solution that cannot be removed by the patient and is typically made from materials like porcelain or metal. This option works well if you have strong teeth remaining on either side of the gap for support.
  • Chrome dentures are partial dentures that use a chrome-cobalt metal framework. These dentures replace several missing teeth, but unlike bridges, they are removable. The chrome framework gives them durability while remaining lightweight and comfortable for long-term use.

Eating with new dentures? Eating with new dentures can take some getting used to. Initially, it’s recommended to start with soft foods cut into smaller pieces. Over time, as you become more comfortable, you can gradually reintroduce firmer foods. Be patient, as learning to chew with dentures can take a few weeks. You’ll likely need to avoid particularly sticky or hard foods during this period.

Adjusting to eating with dentures can be tricky at first, whether you have full, partial, or implant-supported dentures. Full dentures often reduce bite force, making tough or sticky foods harder to chew, so starting with softer options is best. Partial dentures can cause discomfort, especially if chewing unevenly, while implant-supported dentures may cause initial gum tenderness. Regardless of type, practice with softer foods and gradually work up to harder textures as you become more comfortable, always aiming to chew evenly to avoid shifting or soreness.

Bottom molar dentures? If you’re missing bottom molars, a partial denture is typically the best option. Chrome dentures tend to offer more durability for the replacement of molar teeth as they are the stronger material.

Partial dentures

Whites Dental specialise in fitting partial dentures and you can choose from different materials for their construction, including acrylic, chrome, or flexible options, and are designed to fill the gaps where teeth are missing this can be any tooth in the mouth – not just bottom molar dentures. The purpose of opting for this treatment is to ensure your remaining teeth don’t shift and help restore your ability to chew properly. For more information on any aspect of partial dentures, or the costs of partial dentures, you are welcome to arrange a consultation – this can be online or at either of our two dental clinics.

Denture Adhesives

Strongest dentural adhesive? Some of the strongest denture adhesives available in the UK include Fixodent, Poligrip, and Seabond. These adhesives offer varying levels of strength and hold throughout the day. For those seeking maximum stability, a powder adhesive like Fixodent Powder tends to provide a more precise and strong bond. Cream adhesives such as Poligrip Ultra also work well and offer all-day hold.

There are professional-grade denture adhesives available, which are designed for stronger, longer-lasting hold. While most denture adhesives sold in pharmacies and retail stores are designed for consumer use, some brands and formulations are marketed as premium or professional-grade, offering enhanced stability and comfort.

Popular professional denture adhesives include:

  1. Fixodent Professional Strength Adhesive – Provides long-lasting hold and protection from food particles. It is known for its strong grip and extended duration, often used by people who need reliable adhesion for an entire day.
  2. Poligrip Max Hold & Seal – This adhesive is designed to provide a secure fit while minimizing gum irritation. Its formula offers a tight seal that can last throughout the day, even when consuming food and beverages.
  3. Secure Denture Adhesive – Made without zinc, Secure offers a waterproof bond, which prevents slippage even after eating or drinking. It is often recommended for patients needing stronger adhesion due to less-than-perfect denture fit.

While these products are available to the public, dental professionals may recommend specific adhesives based on the patient’s needs. It’s always a good idea to consult your dentist before choosing an adhesive, especially if you experience frequent issues with fit or comfort. They may also offer advice on professional adhesives that suit your type of denture (full, partial, flexible, etc.) Or suggest that an adjustment would be the best solution to the stability.

Denture Cleaners

In the UK, denture cleaners can be found at most pharmacies, supermarkets, and online retailers. Some popular places to buy them include Boots, Superdrug, and Amazon UK.

As for professional brands, here are a few that are well-regarded:

  1. PoliGrip – Known for its denture adhesive products and cleaning solutions.
  2. Steradent – Offers a range of denture cleaning tablets and solutions.
  3. Corega – Provides denture cleaning tablets and other oral hygiene products.
  4. Brite – Specializes in denture cleaning tablets with various formulations.
  5. Effergrip – Known for its denture cleaning and adhesive products.

These brands are often recommended for their effectiveness in cleaning and maintaining dentures.
