Orthodontic Fixed Braces For Teens

Fixed braces are used by millions of patients around the world to straighten their teeth and improve the appearance of their smile. Everyone can benefit from orthodontic braces – from teens to grown adults. If you have misaligned or crooked teeth, you can benefit from teeth straightening treatments.

Why do teens need to wear fixed braces?

Fixed brace treatment is typically most effective once all the molars have erupted. This typically happens in the early teen years for most people (true for molars except wisdom teeth). Sometimes orthodontic treatment can be started sooner, however orthodontic dentists usually wait for every teeth to erupt or emerge before attempting to direct how each teeth should grow. Teen years are therefore the ideal time to start with orthodontic fixed brace treatment as all the teeth have erupted in the mouth, yet the jaw is relatively still supple. As we grow older, the jaw bone grows harder and harder, becoming more brittle in the process. However, the jaw bone in a pre-teen or in an early teen is still relatively supple, enabling fixed brace treatment to be a lot easier. This typically translates to 12 to 13 years of age. In some cases, it can even be at10 or 15 in some instances.

Teen braces vs. adult braces – what’s the difference?

Teens and adult are both able to benefit from orthodontic brace treatment – having straighter teeth, an improved smile and also improved oral health. In teens, the jaw bone is relatively supple; the fixed brace treatment is therefore relatively easier. In adults on other hand, the jaw bone is no longer as supple – orthodontic treatment therefore can take longer to correct and straighten the teeth as compared to someone in their teens. An adult patient typically undergoes fixed brace treatment for between 4 months and 3 years; the duration of treatment is dependent on the severity of the case. For teens, this duration is often a little less. On completion of any orthodontic treatment, retainers have to be worn in order to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original starting positions. Retainers come in two types – temporary or fixed; your orthodontist will be able to provide advice on which type of retainer will be most suited for your needs.

Types of Fixed Braces suitable for teenagers

Fastbraces / 6 Month Smiles – Fastbraces and 6 Month Smiles are innovative orthodontic systems that are still relatively new in the market. They are however, increasingly becoming popular both with teens and with adult patients. Their newer dental technology enables teen and adult patients to quickly straighten their visible teeth – typically in just a few months. We find these two brace systems very popular with adult patients specially.

Damon Braces – Damon is also a new brace system for straightening teeth. The system uses newer technology that allows for quicker treatment times for patients; the technology also leads to less strain to the teeth over the course of the teeth straightening process. Damon braces come in metal and also ceramic brackets. The ceramic brackets have the same colour as the teeth – this makes the system significantly more discreet compared to say regular fixed metal braces.

Lingual Braces – Lingual brace is a somewhat unique type of teeth straightening system in that it uses braces discreetly. Lingual braces are similar to traditional fixed braces – they both have the same components (e.g. brackets and wires). The key difference however is that lingual braces are fitted to the inside surface of the patients teeth, instead of on the outside surface as is the case with traditional fixed braces. This makes lingual braces fully invisible. This is a major advantage for lingual braces – they are fully invisible to others. Patients can therefore undertake teeth straightening treatment in a completely invisibly manner, over the full duration of their treatment. As you would expect, the system is most popular with adults and less so with teens.

Traditional Metal BracesThese are the most common form of fixed braces on the market. We have all seen lots of teens wearing them. Fixed metal braces are typically made of stainless steel, however, ceramic braces are increasingly gaining popularity with teens given ceramic braces are more discreet. Fixed metal braces are very popular with teens as they are very efficient and also cost effective.

What is the cost of braces for Teens

The cost of orthodontic fixed braces can depend on a few different factors. The single biggest factor is the duration of the fixed brace treatment – the longer the treatment, higher the cost. The second most important factor is the type of fixed brace system you decide to use.Lingual braces typically cost more than traditional metal braces. Orthodontic fixed braces usually cost between £1,500 and £5,000. We have provided a list of the costs of our fixed braces in the cost table below.
