Adult Braces in London

When someone thinks of orthodontic braces, they may have flashbacks of their childhood, when orthodontic braces were associated with a mouth full of metal. Even though you may not have had the braces yourself, you likely had friends and family who did. The mouth full of metal was indeed very off-putting to many people and that image has stayed in the minds of many of us since. After reliving those images, the thought of braces most probably sounds a little scary to many of us. It needn’t and shouldn’t be though – in fact, according to research reports, it is estimated that around 1 million adult patients (people over the age of 18) wear orthodontic braces. Adults represent about 25% of all orthodontic patients, and in our practice, adults constitute nearly 95% of our brace patients! Find out more adult braces London.

Getting straight teeth is a key aspect of the dental needs for many teenage patients; it’s never too late for adults to also straighten their smile using braces designed specifically for adults.  Correcting teeth alignment issues like teeth crowding or bite problems can have a significant social and physiological impact, helping improve your self-confidence as an adult and leading to a positive impact on your life. In addition to the improved levels of self-esteem and confidence that’s associated with a straighter, more beautiful smile, straight aligned teeth can also prevent tooth decay, biting and chewing issues, gum disease and earaches and headaches as well. If you are one of those people who’s considered getting braces as an adult, this article is just for you. We address some common orthodontic concerns we often hear from adult patients in the rest of this article.

Adult Braces – Treatment Duration

Younger children and teenagers who wear braces to straighten and align the teeth, for them the overall teeth straightening process is relatively quick. This is because their jaw bones and teeth are still growing and the bones are still ‘soft’. For adults, the jaw bones and teeth have finished growing and the teeth are mostly set in place; the jaw bones are also ‘harder’ as compared to those of a teenager. The combination of these factors results in slightly longer treatment times. Movement of teeth in adults can also be a little slower as a result of higher bone density that comes with older age. For a significant proportion of our adult brace patients, the average treatment duration is between 8 months to 14 months. However, each case is different and at Whites Dental, we customise the treatment plan to each patient – the length of the treatment can therefore vary from individual to individual. Typically, cases with minor crowding or spacing take less than 12 months to treatment, with some orthodontic brace treatments lasting just 4 to 6 months.

If you are concerned about the duration of brace treatments taking too long, you will be pleased to know that a number of newer, more innovative, methods are available to speed up orthodontic treatment. For example, Accele Dent is a relatively new device that uses newer pulse technology in order to initiate movement of teeth. The device looks similar to a mouth guard with a tiny motor or handle attached; it is worn every day for about 20 mins. Early indications show that the device allows teeth to move faster and more comfortably to their new position. Another technique to accelerate teeth movement is called Propel; the technique involves placing some tiny perforations that are difficult to move around your teeth, leading to faster bone remodeling and faster movement of teeth. Both these options help reduce brace treatment duration and can get you a straighter, more beautiful smile faster.

Adult Braces – What Types of Braces Are There?

The braces available today aren’t anything like those that were available when you were a teenager. At Whites Dental, our dentists focus on several types of braces that are suited just for adults; they are nearly invisible to others and will not interfere with your regular day-to-day life. The exact type of braces most suitable for you, will depend on the severity and type of teeth alignment problem  Some of the adult brace options include –

  • InvisalignInvisalign clear plastic aligners are virtually invisible and can be fully removed for eating, drinking and brushing. The teeth movement is detailed by the dentist and sent to the Invisalign lab to create a digital treatment plan. The lab then produces several custom built teeth straightening trays (or aligners as they are called) which are then given to the patient to wear sequentially to align and straighten their teeth.
  • Ceramic BracesCeramic braces are tooth-coloured braces (sometimes also called porcelain braces) that are nearly invisible to others from a distance. The dentist can also provide a tooth-coloured wire and tie, making the braces even less noticeable to others.
  • Lingual bracesLingual braces (also known as Incognito braces) use brackets attached to the inside surface of the teeth, with no visible orthodontic hardware placed on the outside surface. The brackets are custom fit and specifically for your teeth and mouth. As a result, lingual braces are completely invisible to others. A minor downside to lingual or incognito braces is that they can sometimes affect your speech and may be a bit uncomfortable initially due to the increased contact with your tongue.

Living with Orthodontic Braces as an Adult

Orthodontic braces have the ability to completely transform your smile. And the journey need not be difficult. Once your dentist applies your braces, you will probably notice a slight difference in how your teeth feel, how you chew and how you talk. These changes are only natural and expected; you will adjust to the braces before you know it. While wearing your braces, you need to pay extra attention to your oral hygiene, giving additional focus to your brushing and eating habits to ensure food particles are properly removed from your teeth and from around the brackets.

Other than these changes, we expect the braces will fit easily into your active lifestyles and you will be able to transition into wearing them quite naturally.
