What are the best porcelain veneers?

Porcelain Veneers In London - before after picture of a man with gappy teeth

Porcelain veneers come closest to rivalling your natural teeth for strength and appearance. They are sturdy and usually last 15+ years. And they produce excellent natural looking smile results. Porcelain veneers are therefore very popular for making smile improvements – whether that be for 2-4 teeth or for a full smile makeover. Hollywood smile makeovers are very popular in London, as are more natural looking smile results.

Lumineers go one step further – they are just 0.2mm thick and because they are so thin, they often require minimal to no tooth preparation. Younger professionals and office goes in London therefore really prefer them for that reason. They can be used to close gaps between teeth, align crooked teeth or even mask discoloured teeth. We highly recommend Lumineers.

    What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Thin shell of porcelain fitted on the tooth surface to improve its appearance
    YouTube video

porcelain veneer is a thin shell made of porcelain that’s fitted to the front surface of the tooth in order to improve its appearance. The porcelain veneer is custom made to exactly fit the tooth and produce the desired smile result.

Porcelain veneers produce very natural looking results – they come closest to mimicking natural teeth in appearance. They are also very sturdy, lasting 10-15 years usually. The dentist usually needs to remove a tiny amount of enamel from the tooth surface to enable the veneer to fit on to the tooth surface. With advancements in technology, newer types of porcelain veneers don’t require any enamel to be removed at all. Lumineers for example are just 0.2mm thick and often don’t require any tooth preparation (no enamel needs to be shaved off). Excellent results.

    Porcelain Veneers Vs Composite Veneers
    Porcelain and composite veneer comparison
    Porcelain Veneers Composite Veneers
What Is It A custom made shell of porcelain is fixed to the front of the tooth, hiding cosmetic imperfections. Between 0.2-0.5mm thick. A tooth coloured resin is applied to the tooth, often lab made, to the desired shape and then hardened. Between 0.8-1mm thick.
Suitability Ideal for both mild changes and extensive smile makeovers. Suited for masking teeth gaps, mis-aligned teeth, worn out teeth and staining. Mild to moderate changes to tooth size and shape can be achieved. Better suited for fixing gaps in teeth, uneven teeth edges, chips and cracks.
Procedure Modern veneers require minimal tooth shaving. Some require no shaving at all. Minimal to nil drilling needed. Minimally invasive. Underlying tooth structure is not damaged. No drilling needed.
Smile Outcome Excellent natural looking smile outcomes. Results not prone to staining. Achieves amazing smile results. However, results not as natural as those from porcelain veneers. Prone to staining
Longevity Stronger than composite veneers. Don’t chip. Lasts 10-15+ years often. Prone to chipping. Not as durable as porcelain veneers. Lasts 4-6 years with good maintenance.
Maintenance Don’t lose shine over time. Minimal maintenance needed. Good oral hygiene required. Can lose lustre over the years. Polishing may be required to maintain shine. Good oral hygiene required.
Affordability More expensive compared to composite veneers. Cost effective treatment for a smile makeover.
    Frequently Asked Questions
Are porcelain veneers worth it ?

One of the main benefits of porcelain veneers is their ability to give you a durable, natural looking smile transformation. They can be used to mask gaps in teeth, crooked teeth and discoloured teeth. Results usually last 15+ years. This can really boost your self confidence, giving you a completely new smile. In our opinion, that makes porcelain veneers very much worth it.

How long will my porcelain veneers last ?

Porcelain veneers are made from different types of porcelain, which is a very durable material. Even though the veneer itself is very thin, the glue + veneer combination creates a very strong and durable result. Porcelain veneers usually last 15+ years. Maintaining good oral health is very important.

Will porcelain veneers make my teeth look fake ?

Not at all. One of the main advantages of porcelain veneers is their ability to produce very natural looking results. In the hands of an experienced cosmetic dentist, a good porcelain veneer will be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Will porcelain veneers damage my natural teeth ?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell that’s placed on the front surface of your teeth. Traditional porcelain veneers require a small amount of tooth preparation – a tiny layer of enamel is shaved to allow the veneer to fit. However, with advances in modern technology, very little enamel needs to be removed – often 0.2-0.4mm. No prep porcelain veneers on the other hand require no tooth preparation at all – no enamel needs to be removed. Most of our younger patients and office going professionals prefer no prep veneers for a smile transformation. Book a free consultation to see if no prep veneers might be suitable for you.

Can I see what my teeth will look like with veneers prior to starting treatment ?

Yes of course. Our dentist can create a digital smile model (a physical model can also be prepared) to show you what your smile is expected to look like prior to starting treatment. Once you are happy with the expected outcome, only then will our dentist start with your smile transformation.

    Who can have porcelain veneers?

Almost any person with healthy teeth can have Porcelain Veneers. Porcelain Veneers are routinely used to fix –

1.Discoloured teeth – Teeth that are discoloured because of either a root canal procedure, stains from tetracycline or other kinds of drugs, excessive presence of fluoride or due to large resin fillings that may have discoloured the tooth

    2.Worn down teeth

    3.Chipped or broken teeth

4.Misaligned teeth, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth (for example, teeth that have craters or bulges in them)

5.Teeth with gaps in between them

What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are a commonly used cosmetic dental procedure to help improve the appearance of your teeth and smile. Porcelain veneers have the following benefits –

    Veneers offer the following advantages:

1.Porcelain Veneers provide a natural appearance to the tooth.

2.Gum tissue tolerates porcelain veneers well.

3.Porcelain veneers have good resistance to staining.

4.Porcelain veneers can be selected so that they can make dark or discoloured teeth appear whiter.

5.A Porcelain veneer offers a conservative approach to changing the shape and colour of a tooth – veneers typically do not require as extensive grinding and shaping that dental crowns require, however still offer a strong, more aesthetic alternative to crowns.

What are the disadvantages of porcelain veneers?

Porcelain Veneers have the following disadvantages –

1.The process of attaching a porcelain veneer to the tooth is not reversible.

2.Porcelain Veneers are typically more costly than composite resin bonding or composite veneers.

3.Porcelain Veneers are typically not repairable were they to crack or chip.

4.Your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold given tooth enamel has been removed to fix the porcelain veneer,

5.Porcelain Veneers colour cannot be altered once it is in place. If you plan to whiten your teeth, you will need to undergo the whitening procedure prior to getting porcelain veneers.

6.Porcelain veneers can potentially dislodge and fall off, although this is quite unlikely. To minimize the risk of dislodge your porcelain veneer, we advise all our patients not to bite your nails or chew on pencils or other hard objects.

7.Teeth with porcelain veneers attached to them can still experience tooth decay, possibly requiring full coverage of the tooth with a dental crown.

8.Porcelain Veneers are typically not a good option for patients with unhealthy teeth (e.g. patients with tooth decay or gum disease), weakened teeth (often due to tooth decay, large fillings or fracture) or for patients who have inadequate enamel on the surface of their teeth.

9.Patients who have a history of grinding or clenching their teeth are usually not good candidates for having porcelain veneers, given clenching and grinding can cause the porcelain veneers to chip or crack.

Do porcelain veneers require specific or special care?

Porcelain veneers do not require any specific or special care. We advise all our patients who have had porcelain veneers to follow good oral hygiene including regular flossing, brushing and rinsing with a mouthwash. Even though porcelain veneers are stain resistance, we recommend to our patients to avoid stain-causing foods and drink items such as red wine, coffee or tea.

What Are The Alternatives To Porcelain Veneers?

Alternatives to porcelain veneers include composite bonding (also called dental bonding), composite veneers and dental crowns. Porcelain veneers offer a nice intermediate option to patients. Porcelain veneers are best suited for patients who want to make significant changes to the shape and size of their teeth and want natural looking results – more than what is possible from composite bonding or composite veneers.
