What are the options for correcting teeth?

Millions of people across the world use orthodontic braces to straighten their teeth. However, the decision to get braces is a decision many of us take after a lot of thought. There are many factors to consider that will help you decide what braces to get. These factors can include the treatment duration, cost of the overall treatment and also appearance of your teeth with the braces.A large proportion of people, from teenagers to older adults, would like to have braces but aren’t comfortable to have braces that look very unsightly. They prefer something quick and discreet to straighten their teeth. This is quite different from the past, where most people only had the option to use highly visible fixed metal braces.
Fortunately, advances in orthodontic teeth straightening in the past decade provide patients a number of different brace options to straighten their teeth today. Orthodontic solutions available today provide a variety of aesthetically pleasing options to patients, thus allowing patients of any age, from teenagers to grown adults, to feel comfortable with the appearance of their teeth and smile while having their teeth straightened. What that essentially means is that you no longer need to necessarily have metal railroad braces to get a natural, straight smile.
Are you after a discreet, minimalist appearance? Or do you want to show off your orthodontic braces proudly? Our orthodontic dentists offer a range of brace options to fit your specific teeth straightening needs.

Metal

Fixed metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic brace system; they have been successfully used by millions of teenagers for decades. Fixed metal braces comprise of small brackets, typically made of stainless steel, that are fixed directly to the front surface of each tooth, with an orthodontic wire connecting them all. The wire and brackets are secured with tiny yellow rubber bands, to maintain tension on the teeth. The rubber bands can come in a wide variety of colours. Metal braces are often a good choice for both teenagers and adults, and very popular with teenagers specially. The good news is that, with advances in technology, metal braces are smaller and also more comfortable than ever before.

Ceramic

Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces and work very much in the same way; the brackets are fixed to the front surface of each tooth and secured with an orthodontic wire and plastic rubber bands. However, the main difference with ceramic braces is that the brackets are made of porcelain or ceramic material that’s the same colour as your teeth. These braces are therefore also known as clear braces, ceramic braces or porcelain braces. They are significantly less noticeable than dark metal coloured fixed metal braces. A number of our patients undertaking ceramic brace treatment with us post pictures on social media with their ceramic braces on; in most of their pictures, the braces aren’t noticeable at all. This is one of the biggest benefits of Ceramic braces – they are a lot more discreet than metal braces.

Ceramic braces are very popular with both adults and teenagers, but more so with adults who want to have their teeth straightened, but prefer to not to have their smile and social life impacted by an unsightly smile associated with metal braces. Teenagers too are increasingly wanting to use ceramic braces, however, given ceramic braces can be a little more expensive than metal braces, they aren’t as popular with teenagers just as yet.

Invisible

With Invisalign braces, we begin to move away from the traditional bracket and wire system and move towards a different teeth straightening technology that relies on a series of clear aligners to straighten your teeth. Invisalign consists of a series of clear plastic trays (also called aligners) to gradually move and straighten your teeth, with each set of aligners moving your teeth just a little bit, followed by the next set of aligners which then moves the teeth a little bit further, till your teeth have reached their planned final positions.
Invisalign aligners are virtually or nearly invisible to the eye. Others won’t be able to even tell you are wearing them unless they look really hard. Patients can continue to eat and drink as they usually do, including all their favourite good, as the aligners are completely removable. The aligners can also be removed for that rare exception when you need to attend a special occasion or have that really important meeting at work. Invisalign aligners also allow you to brush and floss your teeth more easily as the aligners can be completely removed while you clean your teeth. This in turn leads to much better oral hygiene over the course of the Invisalign treatment.
Invisalign braces can treat a wide range of orthodontic cases however, they aren’t the most efficient option for more complex cases, where traditional braces are usually preferred. Invisalign braces provide for a great option for both adults and teenagers who are interested in an aesthetically pleasing teeth straightening option. Invisalign delivers really well on that!

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are probably the most advanced option for teeth straightening. It uses advanced orthodontic technology wherein the braces are fitted to the inside surface of the teeth, instead of on the outside as is the case with traditional orthodontic braces. Lingual braces are also called hidden braces or Incognito braces. As the braces sit on the inside surface of the teeth, they are completely invisible from the outside to other people. As with Invisalign, lingual braces are not always the best brace option for each case, however, in cases where they can be applied, they provide an advanced, aesthetically pleasing teeth straightening option to patients. We find lingual braces are especially popular with busy office professionals who wish to straighten their teeth discreetly without having the need to have removable braces.
